IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY
Seven cars of a Rock Island freight derailed near Platteview High School on Sunday January 19, 1983, at 2:15a.m. The derailment was northeast of Springfield. The accident was reported by passerby to the Springfield Police Department. Hopper-type cars filled with soybeans spilled a large quantity down an embankment. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. Approximately twenty-five workers were brought to the scene to assist with the clearing the wrecked freight cars, soybeans, and repairing the railroad tracks. Rock Island trains were rerouted to a Burlington-Northern line while the damage was being repaired.
