IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

History railroad

Salvage company removing Missouri Pacific railroad tracks

The first Missouri Pacific train ran through Springfield on March 24, 1882.  A depot was constructed and ready for the first train to stop in Springfield.  Nearly all of Springfield residents came out to greet the Missouri Pacific railroad officials who were on the train. The first depot agent was A.B. Betts who lived with his family at the depot. The Missouri Pacific main line ran between Omaha to Kansas City for freight trains and a passenger train that came through once a day. Trains traveled daily through Springfield until one hundred years later in August 1982, the Missouri Pacific railroad applied to the Interstate Commerce Commission for elimination of the route that ran through Ralston to the Portal area, then southward by Westmont, through Springfield, continuing parallel along Highway 50 to Louisville. In December of 1986 a salvage company began removing the railroad tracks and the property was sold.  Eventually a portion of the land south of Springfield was donated for the construction of the Mo-Pac trail. Remnants of the tracks can be seen along the trail south of Springfield.
