SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
Do not start cleaning your beds yet or changing your mulch yet, way too early. There are a lot of little beneficial insects sleeping in those beds and it is too early for them to wake up.
So, I decided I would take this time to talk to you about mulch. There are so many varieties of mulch available anymore. When I first started gardening there were wood chips and that was it. Now there is multiple colors of chips with all sorts of colors, sizes, and woods. There are also cocoa shells, rocks (please don't), pine needles, rubber, paper shreds, etc. etc.
What you use is up to you.
I don't recommend rock because it heats up your plant roots and weed seeds can still come through.
Please don't volcano rock around the base of your trees. Make sure your mulch reaches out to the "drip line" or circumference of your tree. You may need to increase that circle as the tree grows.
