SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
Garden Notes
It's 2023 and I'm Baaacckkk! We are going to make this year the best growing year ever! Bigger flowers, more veggies, more herbs....
Have you started your seeds? Do you know how? Would you like a class on how to start seeds at the fairgrounds? Let Connie know and I can put one together for you.
We have some new ideas for the fairgrounds. If you are interested on how our meetings go and find out about how to become a Master Gardener. Come Thursday at 9 am at the 4-H building on March 10th. All are welcome.
Now, down to business: cleaning your beds. Make sure and rake up all leaves and you can do some of your pruning now before bud break.
When you clean your containers do the same. Clean the debris from last year and even loosen the soil up so it can start to warm. This also helps to find anything that may have made it in the container over the winter like grubs, nuts, or corn.
Well, that's enough till next week. No planting until ground temp is 50 degrees so be patient grasshoppers.

IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY
Pictured: Mrs. LaVerna Sayers teaching the four food groups in 1978
Springfield Pre-School was opened in 1974 by co-directors, LaVerna Sayers and Judy Troxel. Preschool was held 2 ½ days per week for 3, 4, and 5 year old children. The program began at the First United Methodist Church but later moved to Mrs. Sayers’ garage after transforming the space into a preschool classroom. Mrs. Sayers and Mrs. Troxel focused on play and socialization, listening, communication skills, motor development, visual memory, following directions, and developing an awareness of the world around them. The program included stories, lessons, arts and crafts, songs, fingerplays, dancing, and special field trips.
