Companion Planting
No I am not talking about planting your dog or your husband because they're your companions...I am talking about putting plants together that might benefit each other. We will talk about the reasons why you should do it if possible and the possible plant combinations that work well in the garden.
First, most of the information comes from the University of Minnesota Extension. They performed research on the subject and you can find it at extension.umn.edu.
First:
Think about space saving. A lot of plants can be planted because they are harvested at slightly different times. Radishes and lettuce are a prime example because of times of harvest and can be planted quite near each other.
Second:
Different root structures. A deep tap root like a carrot or potato can break the soil up and tomatoes can help bring up the nutrients.
Another discussion in the "Companion planting in the Home Garden" report was the most common companion planting that of the "Three Sisters". This planting was common in Native American gardens which is corn, squash, and beans. Corn can be thought of like a trellis, beans climb the corn, and squash is at the base. Beans provide nitrogen and squash is a deterrent for corn loving animals like raccoons.
Marigolds are commonly used companion for most plants because of the pollinator capability. There are several varieties and that is up to you.
There are several lists online, but there are no guarantee that they will work because of Mother Nature.
FYI...Still cleaning the fairgrounds.
We will be dividing plants down at the fairgrounds soon so look at the plant exchange shelf for some new plants. Feel free to share your divisions with your Springfield companions.
