SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
Chemicals:
Should you treat your lawns for grubs? What do I do for dark spots on my roses? There are these orange globby things on my cedar, what do I do?
Everyone has questions about how to treat or should you treat for this and for that? To answer these questions that is why we have Backyard Farmer and the Master Gardeners.
BYF is a 60 production of our Nebraska Public Media and just started this year’s season. It is shown weekly Thursday nights and you can send in questions by email along with pictures, location, and description of the problem or insect to
If you’re a find out for yourself kind of person, you can search Master Gardeners nebguides at http://extension.unl.edu put your problem in the search area and go from there. If not, the Douglas-Sarpy County Extension has a Master Gardener helpline open currently at 402-444-7804 and ask for the Master Gardener helpline.
Make sure that when you do decide to use a chemical for any problem that may have occurred that you read the directions. You don’t want to run a risk of over treating or spreading the chemical to another plant that doesn’t need it.
Also make sure and wear gloves or the necessary protective equipment when working with chemicals and store according to the label. Label if not fully used for next year.
Okay, okay enough about chemicals. This week we start clean up in the garden. What will we find? Snakes, bird nests, spiders??? You’ll have to wait and see.

HAPPENING NEARBY
You might have, so generously, given food and/or hygiene items, water and other drinks, cash, gift cards, time and effort. Your contribution to the volunteer firefighters of all the fire departments who answered the call of duty, to the Easter weekend fire at Lake Waconda, Union, NE, was astonishing and greatly appreciated. Many items were sent home with those firefighters who traveled from afar to help in the effort.
Union Fire Chief, Shane Adams, wants to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU, on behalf of all the firefighters, for your donations.
