Springfield Master Gardeners News
There heeerrrrreee!
Your worst enemies as a gardener...the insects, weeds, and diseases. What do you do about dandelions, colony of ants have set up residence in my yard next to my tree, my tomatoes have this funny looking spot on the end of them?
First of all...take a long, deep breath.
According to Kelly Feehan of the University of Nebraska Extension in an article published May 4, 2020, "Turf Info Early Spring Dandelion Control Options" by Bill Kreuser (UNL Turf specialist) diacamba, MCPP, and 2-4-D are the ingredients to look for in the products you choose to treat them. You can also use those dandelion pickers to dig them out in the spring. She also states the best time to treat them is in the fall. Also keep in mind that early in the spring there are some small pollinators coming out and they use those dandelions for snacks till there are more plants available so try not to mow every day. You can also eat them yourselves in salads or even make wine.
Weeds are difficult because there are different ways to treat them and make sure you identify the weeds first before you treat them. Before you eat anything make sure it hasn't been sprayed and make sure you know what you’re snacking on.
As you’re looking over your sea of yellow in your lawn and you notice that tree sure has a lot of ants around it. Go to take a closer look. You are most likely seeing carpenter ants. These little insects feed on decaying wood so I would check that tree for an open wound or signs off being hollow. That would be time to thank your ants for showing you that your tree is in trouble and may need to be removed.
Now I am not a big fan of Japanese beetles, spiders, and such but I have to respect them and their place. Make sure and ID your insects you’re worried about first, then find out if they are good or bad before you try to wipe them out of your garden. There are a lot of treatments out there for everything and when you read the label you find out what you sprayed. Some can make your vegetables inedible, or you find out you just killed the monarch butterfly caterpillars. Please IDENTIFY first by taking a picture if you’re not sure what it is and send it in or bring it in to the Extension on 84th and Center or send it to
Diseases is a subject that a lot of people are not sure what to do. The tomato spots on the bottom of the fruit is most often blossom end rot which is usually caused by overwatering not by soil. I use the Nebguide website of UNL to help me with problem areas.
So, whether you’re dealing with weeds, critters, or diseases make sure you identify before you act.
Please join me for a "Ask the Local Master Gardener" time at the Springfield Memorial Library on June 8th at 6pm. Just going to be available to answer what questions you may have about what's going on in your backyard.
