SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
Ready....
Set.........
Go..........Go get your hands dirty! Most of you probably already have started sticking your treasures into the pots, the gardens, and those raised beds. But have you made those choices keeping in mind root spacing?
Make sure and remember if you’re sticking plants together you know not to stick a drought tolerant plant next to something that needs to be soaked twice a day like fennel and oregano or lavender which is drought tolerant.
Keep the number of plants in mind in containers. My MG teachers always say height, middle, and down the sides (thriller, filler, and spiller). You need height to get attention, something in the middle (plant, garden gnomes, miniature garden design) and a spiller which of course would be a vine like a sweet potato vine or ivy. Don't over crowd the planter with plants though, the little roots can get choked out if overcrowded.
Now we begin those pages in the garden journal called mapping. Don't forget to make a map and either a number or color and write down what you planted and where. Those markers from the plants easily disappear and I don't really like leaving them in the pots but that way I know what works and what doesn't. I have a one-year rule. If after one year even with weather issues, you don't survive Nebraska weather, you’re gone.
Well, we start planting this week in the garden at the fairgrounds so you will begin to see some color. Still a little cleanup, but now all my husband's little gems from starting seeds will begin to see the light of the sun.
Remember the water.
