IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY
One of the many Jaycees fundraisers was a 4th of July fireworks stand. It was located on Highway 50 near Neitzel’s gas station to attract business from the north and south traffic. The photo, taken in 1990, shows Jaycee member, Pat Carl helping kids make their fireworks purchases.
SPRINGFIELD MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
Mother Nature does pay attention every once in a while and you do get rain. Over 2 inches of rain last week and we are forever grateful. We need still to pay attention to our plants because they will still dry out quickly.
Now is when your friends start to arrive like the Japanese Beetles and your rots and spots.
Beetles are a pick them off and drop them a soapy bucket job. Don't get the traps because they attract and do not repel. So unless you want a lot of visitors to your garden, you'll just have to continue to pick them off and teach them to swim.
When you’re dealing with rots and spots such as calcium end rot please determine the disease or insect before you treat. You can take samples into the Extension at 84th and Center St.
(Blossom end rot is due to uneven watering not lack of soil calcium)
We are beginning to get some of our cherry tomatoes and I hope you are starting to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
You have received all this glorious precipitation and we talked about Japanese beetle arriving but what about the mosquitoes, my personal irritation along with flies.
You may see more mosquitoes with additional water, everyone. You may want to go out and empty your little trays under your plants and any other places water may stand. It does not take much water for them to lay their eggs.
You can get some items that can help for individual bites and prevention and treating the outdoor areas which you are sitting enjoying the outdoors (read labels). You can also get mosquito dunks for birdbaths and rain barrels which won't affect birds or plants.
If you do get bit, however, keep an eye out but it is usually no big deal. There are several diseases with bites like West Nile Virus so make sure and cover yourself with bug spray.
