IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

The first Nebraskan (Springfield) at Heart award was presented in 1988 during the Celebrate Nebraska festivities. With a handshake and a hug, Mayor Duane Neitzel gave the award to Hazel Latham who shared a bit of her history in the area. Hazel was three years old when her family settled on the Bill Vierregger farm in 1910. After graduating from Springfield she taught music until 1928 when she went to work for her father in the livestock office. When the depression hit, their family lost everything. With the financial help of a friend, they bought buildings on the south side of Main Street and went into the restaurant, pool hall, and bar business. In 1949 they sold their businesses and returned to livestock, adding an elevator and lumberyard to their property. Hazel’s husband Phil helped start the bank that was located on the southeast corner of 2nd and Main Street. After Phil’s death, she sold the lumber yard and her interest in the feed yard. When receiving the award, Hazel said, “I think it’s been a great day. We should have this every year.”
SPRINGFIELD MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
Invasion of Insects and diseases!
Rain Rain Glorious Rain!!
1. Look out for those mosquitoes now. Bug spray and tip over those buckets of still water and bird baths if you see ripples in the water (mosquito eggs).
2. You should start seeing more wasps and larger grasshoppers. If you need to deter them from garden areas please read labels on suggested products from your local retailers before use. Some may affect pollinators.
3. Yes, the Japanese Beetles have arrived. We haven't seen them in large quantities yet but they are here.
4. Keep an eye out on your prairie cone flowers. You’re looking for a deformed head sometimes with little leaves and it's called Asters Yellow. Just remove the infected bloom so it doesn't spread.
5. Look for rust spots on leaves. Don't freak, it's just extra water splash. The spots are just cosmetic and won't affect the overall health of the plant for the most part. Make sure and bring samples to your local Extension.
