IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

 History BuffaloSchool

Buffalo School in the 1900's. School Teacher George Hammond (middle back row) with students, 1st - 8th grades.

It’s back to school week. Let’s learn about the country school, Buffalo School. Located at 15005 Buffalo Road, the school was in existence from 1864 to 1957. The school began with just one room until 1917 when school district 8 patrons voted to construct a new building. A little barn near the school was used for students to keep the horses they rode to school. During an interview for a school project Springfield’s late mayor, Mike Dill, who attended Buffalo School shared that the school did not have indoor plumbing. In 1957 due to the reorganizations of Nebraska’s school districts, Buffalo School closed and was sold to a local family. The building was moved and converted into a garage.

Gardening

SPRINGFIELD MASTER GARDENERS NEWS

Sometimes in the gardening world you feel like you’re being attacked from all sides. Not only by the beauty of those asters and purple cone flower, but attacked by the chiggers in the lawn, the grasshoppers that appear from nowhere, and those stupid, #&! thirteen line ground squirrels.

It is this time of year that you realize you should have put up a fence to deter those bunny rabbits. Chicken wire buried in the ground a good foot or so should hopefully slow the process of those carrot lovers.

If you have found a way to catch mice that works let me know. I feel like all we are doing is helping our mice get fat with the peanut butter and stuff we have tried.

There are some traps that can help with the outside critters such as moles, voles, raccoons, and so on but make sure to follow state rules. Some trapped animals can only be released 100 yards from where you trapped it.

There are also some sprays for mosquitoes and chiggers at night but make sure you read the label. You don't want to get our pollinators.

Haven't seen a lot of Japanese beetles this year, but still have a bucket of soapy water to put them in when found. Stay away from the traps because that only draws them in.

Ok, I have ranted enough. I hope you enjoyed the Sarpy County Fair. Master Gardeners will not be working Thursday because we are taking a field trip to the Sunken Gardens in Lincoln. Don't worry, I'll take pictures.
