IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY
The Springfield Boosters were extremely popular with Springfield area youth in August 1957. The Boosters gave away free Sarpy County Fair carnival ride tickets for kids ages 14 and under, as long as supplies lasted. Several thousand tickets were distributed for carnival rides on Friday August 23, 1957.

SPRINGFIELD MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
Absolutely perfect weather to tour a sunken garden, sounds like it's under water doesn't it. Last Thursday it was 75 degrees, no rain, and some happy gardeners.
After months of working on the Sarpy County Fairgrounds, some of the Master Gardener’s and I went down to Lincoln to do a tour of the gardens. It has been years since I have been there and it is still as beautiful as ever. Of course, we had to finish the tour of Lincoln with a visit to UNL's Dairy Store, but still was very educational.
This garden located across from the Lincoln Children's Zoo is a delight. I have attached some pictures below.
Please don't do any fertilizing in this 100 degrees stretch and also step up watering again. Your produce maturing will slow again due to the excessive heat and should step up again when we cool down.
Also wanting to let you know that we will be giving a "How to close up your garden" speech at Springfield Memorial Library September 7th, 2023, at 6:30 pm. Come one, come all and watch the two crew leaders of the Fairgrounds give you those crazy gardening tips.

OPPD Shares Energy Savings Guidance During Hot Spell
The extended heat wave that Nebraska is experiencing has air conditioners working extra hard – and not just within Omaha Public Power District, but across our region.
Our customers can take steps to conserve energy, keeping their utility bills lower and supporting power reliability. Some steps we can take include:
- If using an air conditioner, adjusting thermostats up a few degrees.
- Use dampers on ductwork to balance airflow in your home if one room is colder or warmer than another.
o Closing registers should be a last resort if dampers are not available.
- Seal external doors and windows with weather stripping – and close shades during the day.
- Avoid washing and drying clothing or running dishwashers in the hottest parts of the day.
- Avoid “phantom” power loss:
o Switch desktop computers and monitors to sleep mode when not in use, or just shut them off entirely.
o Unplug electronics like televisions or cable boxes, if possible, when not in use.
o Use a central power strip that allows you to easily turn off multiple devices at once.
Visit OPPD.com/ee for more energy efficiency and conservation tips, including a room-by-room guide to energy savings, as well as how-to videos, and more.
