SPRINGFIELD MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
Did you know you can still plant some fall garden veggies to enjoy throughout the fall? Alot of vegetables have short maturation dates so they can be planted in late July and August. This includes crops like broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and kale. You can still get production from lettuce, spinach, and radishes. Just watch for bolting. My favorites like carrots and potatoes of course can be harvested into late fall. Just watch the carrots for size so they don't get overly big and split.
First thing, you need to do is to check the back of the seed packets and see the germination time from the first frost date. Once you have done your calculations, you may direct sow, or start them in the fridge on a damp paper towel until the roots sprout.
When you plant your fall crops, you can use your garden area. Make sure you’re not putting them where there might be disease or bug issues like squash vine bores.
Remove the previous plant, till in 2 to 3 inches of compost and check for the need of light fertilizer. If the soil temp is too high, you can put a pot at each end of the row to block out some of the sun during the day.
You can use row covers for protection from fall insects and temp extremes.
Most of this information can be found in the Nebguide done by David Lott and Dale Lindgen #1343.
Irises can be split now. Put them in an outward triangle facing their rhizomes away from each other. You face them away so they don't grow into each other. Make sure and keep your labels with the plants so you don't spend your later years saying, "I don't know what it is but it's pretty". Do a map and keep up with the changes.
My final statement for the week is please don't teach your children to swat at a bee. Bees by nature really don't sting unless you swat. The sweat bee can but normally only if agitated and your sweet smell gives them the salt they need.
