IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY
Another long-time business operating in Springfield was Thompsons Service Station. In 1933 William R. (Buff) Thompson opened his new service station located on the east side of Main Street & Highway 50. Buff and Evagene Thompson had two daughters, Jean (Gottsch), Dona (McKewen), and a son, James. In 1949, the Thompson’s son, Jim, and wife, Jan, took over the operation of the service station. Thompsons Texaco Service Station added a dealership of boats, campers, and sporting goods in 1968 for all outdoor enthusiasts and especially those traveling along Highway 50. Jim Thompson also held a pilot’s license. During a July 4, 1970 celebration held at J & J Airport near Springfield, the highlight of the day was free airplane rides given by Jim to guests attending the event. Sadly, in 1973 Thompson Service Station and Sporting Goods was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Swanigan due to Mr. Thompson’s ill health.
