IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY
Pictured left to right: Shirley Santee, Robert (Bob) Shepler & Bob's wife, Orlou Shepler
Winner of a grand prize trip to Colorado Springs, CO, Joan Miller, with her children John and Angela. Santee Food Mart owner, Shirley Santee is pictured on the right. The trip was sponsored by Coca Cola for the grocery store.
In January 1982 long-time Springfield grocery store owner, Robert Shepler, sold his business to Carl and Shirley Santee. Carl continued working while Shirley managed Santee Food Mart. Shirley Santee wanted to offer the same warm welcome to the Springfield community as Bob Shelper had during his 30 years of service. Santee Food Mart continued offering Saturday delivery service, quality USDA beef, and superior grocery products. The store expanded when a storage area was remodeled to include a liquor store. During their years of business, the Food Mart held prize drawing and specialty days, such as “Farmers Day”, celebrating the local farming community. In 1985, Santee Food Mart was sold to Roger and Joyce Dinslage.

SPRINGFIELD MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
I know, I know I missed last week's article, but we decided to take our annual one-day vacation to Grand Island for the Nebraska State Fair. We spent the day looking at their gardens, the 4H entries, and open class floral displays. Other than it being 100 degrees, it was fun.
Now back to gardening in Sarpy County. It's time to get ready to put your garden to bed. I don't mean sheets and pillowcases; I mean cleaning your debris up and putting your items in the compost. Just make sure and don't compost diseased items.
Time to cut down your peonies and keep eyes out for praying mantis sacks and save them.
Time to plant your fall bulbs; daffodils, crocus, etc. are available now.
Check those items that worked for you and save the tags or write them in the journal I have told you to get.
This week also wash those indoor houseplants cleaning the leaves off. Let them stay outside for a while longer then wash again when you’re ready and spray with neem oil.
Finally, before I forget, we want to thank the people who attended our speech at the Springfield Memorial Library. Connie and Kelly are wonderful hosts.
