IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

 History KigerHome robbery

Pictured: (left to right) Roy & John Kiger, owners of Kiger Brothers Garage

Crime doesn’t pay proved to be a valuable lesson to a young man from Plattsmouth. After being burglarized not once but three times at John Kiger’s home just to the southeast of Springfield, a trap was laid to catch the thief.  In January 1956, items missing from Kiger’s home included: $40 from Kiger’s wallet, a wallet containing $100, and a table top radio. Kiger reported to Sarpy County authorities that he would sometimes doze off while watching television in the evening. It was thought that someone was coming in through the back door. Mr. Kiger and Springfield Marshall, Irvie Nolte, arranged for Nolte to hide in the house. The first night of the trap proved a success. Apparently the apprehended youth had cohorts since after catching the thief, Marshall Nolte heard someone shout, “They got him” and saw a car driving off with no lights on.

 Gardening

SPRINGFIELD MASTER GARDENERS NEWS

Changes, the times they are a changing. While our little gardens are dwindling down there is still plenty of work to be done.

1. Lawn care - John Fesch of the Douglas and Sarpy County Extension states in the Omaha World Herald that now is the time to aerate your lawns. It improves drainage, reduces compaction, and makes it easier for fertilizer to reach the roots.

2. Now is the time to work with the perennials in your gardens. If they didn't grow to well, now is the time to move them because of sunlight issues.

3. Clean up debris from your veggies.

4. As I stated before, fall is excellent time for planting new trees and shrubs. Excellent Nebraska choice lists in UNL nebguides.

5. Leave rose pruning until spring.

6. Remember to be washing those house plants that have vacationed on the deck all summer.

Remember  GROW GREEN!
