IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY
Charles Calhoun, Springfield Historian
We are going way back to Springfield’s beginnings this week, thanks to Springfield historian Charles Calhoun. In 1931, for the fifty year anniversary of Springfield, Mr. Calhoun wrote a series of articles for the Springfield Monitor newspaper. His column ran in the newspaper for a little over six months. His excellent memories provided a look into the founding of the Springfield area. This account is actually a little before our town was established and to the southwest on the “Big Buffalo” creek. Ebenezer Fisher ran a water power gristmill and trading post for all local residents who brought their wheat, buckwheat, and corn to be ground into flour and meal which during the long winter months provided thousands of loaves of bread, and millions of buckwheat pancakes, along with wild honey from the cottonwood trees along the banks of the Platte River. Orval Dow ran a general store near the Fisher mill providing tea, coffee, sugar, tobacco, cigars, patent medicines, and a few pieces of calico, gingham, and shirting fabrics. Customers of the general store included many names familiar to Springfield’s history: Bill and Hugh Armstrong, Emanuel Schall, Ervin Cumings, John R. Nicholson, Judge M. G. Nicholson, James Blunt, Isaac Cornish, Billie Gerard, Cal Ringo, and Frank Minturn. Thank you to Bob Shepler who compiled Calhoun’s accounting and donated copies of the articles to Springfield Memorial Library for the local history area.

SPRINGFIELD MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
The gardening year is over for the most part. If you’re lucky your still reaping the bounty of all your hard work.
I would like to see some pictures of your gardens so please send them to Connie Manzer at the library so we can all marvel at what good gardeners you have become.
Now as we work our way into fall, I ask that you be patient with all the farmers and their equipment on the road. Remember they are the ones who feed you.
I would like to thank the Sarpy County Fair for their support of our teaching garden. Springfield Memorial Library for letting me share some garden information with you.
I hope are continually enjoying the fruits of your labor. I really appreciate you letting me cross your path in your life. Maybe next year we can try and do a town garden walk.
Finally I would like to thank the Sarpy County Fair crew for another colorful year. You guys are the best. See you soon!
