? Welcome, Springfield Community! ?️

In this edition of the Springfield Wednesday Newsletter, we're gearing up for the excitement of Springfield Days on June 7th, 8th, and 9th! Get ready for a weekend packed with fun-filled events, including a  5k run or 1 mile walk, A parade, and the highlight of the festivities: the annual Lucky Duck Race on June 8th.

But here's the important part: We need your support to make it all happen! You can help by purchasing Lucky Duck tickets directly from the library. Let's rally together and lend a hand to the Friends of the Library, ensuring that our community hub continues to thrive.

So, mark your calendars and join us for Springfield Days! It's a chance to have a blast while also giving back to our beloved library. Let's make a splash and show our support.

Mother's Love Across Miles: Cake Flies to Vietnam for Soldier's 21st Birthday

A decorated cake airmailed to Army Sp 4 Jerry Miner from Springfield, NE, arrived in Chulai, Vietnam, just in time for his birthday on April 18, 1968. Jerry's mother, Mrs. Don Miner, mailed the cake on April 9. It reached him on April 14 without so much as a piece of icing out of place. Birthdays at the Miners' meant a special cake, and Mrs. Miner didn’t want her son to be without one for his 21st birthday. The cake was baked and decorated by Mrs. Leon Ruff, who inscribed it with, "Congratulations Son on your 21st birthday." Jerry and his Vietnam War pals took a group photo, then enjoyed the birthday cake and other refreshments.

The Vietnam War lasted from November 1, 1955, to April 30, 1975.
