Welcome, Springfield Community!

Welcome to this week's edition of the Springfield Wednesday Newsletter! ?

In this edition, we're highlighting Bike Safety Week as part of National Bike Safety Month. It's a great time to refresh our knowledge of safe biking practices and encourage each other to be mindful on the road.

Did you know that the number one way to stay safe while biking is to simply wear a properly fitted bike helmet? Despite being such a simple safety measure, many cyclists still don't wear helmets.

In 2019, over 840 bicyclists died on US roadways, and 40 of those were cyclists aged 14 years old and younger. Additionally, 88% of cyclists aged 16 years old and younger who were injured during a bike accident were not wearing helmets.

Let's all commit to wearing helmets and promoting safe biking practices to keep our community safe. Thank you for joining us in making Springfield a safer place to ride!

It is also important for bike riders to know proper hand signals to alert other riders or drivers (for adults) of their plans to turn or change lanes. Using hand signals, voice alerts, and bells can help you communicate your intentions and let others know you are approaching.

Let's all commit to wearing helmets, using proper communication methods, and promoting safe biking practices to keep our community safe. Thank you for joining us in making Springfield a safer place to ride!

 Springfield Community Clean-Up: May 11th, 2024

Clean Up Day May 11th flyer page 0

The Distinguished Master Gardener Service Award is presented to
an individual Master Gardener who has made a significant impact
toward the Extension Master Gardener program. For the first time
ever, the 2023 award was presented to two well-deserved
individuals, Bob and Amy Green.
Bob and Amy’s converging paths began many years ago. Amy
graduated from Murdoch High, not far from Springfield High School,
where Bob graduated. They became members of the American Iris
Society and the Omaha Day Lily Society. They were very active in
community activities including The Sarpy County Fairgrounds,
Springfield Cemetery Committee and St. Joseph’s church.
Bob and Amy Green became Master Gardeners in 2007. They
served as co-leaders of the Sarpy County Fairgrounds Master
Gardener crew. They volunteered hundreds of hours each year at
the Fairgrounds. They also volunteered the Fairgrounds to become
an All-American Selections trial garden. This involved significant
work planting seeds, meticulously documenting the outcome and
even tending to plants in their own greenhouse! In 2022, the Sarpy
County Fairground Board recognized Bob and Amy and their crew
for their years of dedicated support. Throughout the years Bob and
Amy have mentored numerous interns, providing them with a rock-
solid start into the Master Gardener program.
The Master Gardener of the Year Award has never been presented
to two individuals. Sadly, Amy passed away in November 2023.
Bob Amy Green

RIP Amy.

It Happened in Springfield

It was  1989, the Springfield business community expanded at a rapid pace.

A business strip mall was built at the corner of 2nd Street and Platteview Road. The first business to open was B & B Pit Stop, a convenience shop and gas station owned by Tom and Shirley Buskirk.  Pat Moran opened her hair salon "The Works" at the west end of the strip mall, adding up to three chairs to serve customers.  Papa Louie's Pizza was the third business to occupy the space with a carry-out and delivery service. Kay and Dennis Gosch bought the Springfield Insurance Agency, which had an office at Springfield State Bank. They quickly expanded the business by selling all types of insurance.  In June 1989, Springfield State Bank launched new drive-in window hours on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. until noon. During the summer, Latham Lumber owners, Tom and Betty Rosser, sold their building and grounds to Timmerman and Sons Feeding Company. Timmermans relocated its offices from 180th & Platteview Rd. to 2nd & Locust Street after refurbishing the building.  Orville and Allen Kreifels closed Kreifels Hatchery after forty years in Springfield's downtown district. The Kreifels sold the building on the south side of Main Street to Nancy Smith who opened Forever Yours Floral Shop in September 1989.
