Welcome Back, Springfield Community!
As we gear up to celebrate the 4th of July, let’s take a moment to reflect on an intriguing fact that often goes unnoticed: Did you know that the 4th of July hasn’t always been a federal holiday? It wasn’t until 1870 that Congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees. It later became a paid holiday in 1938.
As we prepare to enjoy fireworks, barbecues, and time with loved ones, let’s also appreciate the historical journey that has made this day a cornerstone of American tradition.
Remember to stay safe and have a wonderful Independence Day!

It Happened it Springfield
On June 26, 1976, Springfield hosted an event honoring America's bicentennial. In March 1976,
committee chairman Robert Leigh filed an application to become a Bicentennial Community, signaling
the start of organizing the celebration. Because of the excellent planning done by Springfield residents
and community organizations, the day was a great success. An enormous crowd attended the
celebrations. A patriotic rendition of “Happy Birthday USA” served as the day’s finale.

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4th, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” – Erma Bombeck
