Whoa! What a Start to August!
The last day of July brought an unexpected and severe wind storm that left many of us in the dark as we started August. We hope everyone is safe and recovering well. Despite the challenging start, Springfield is bouncing back with a week full of exciting events to lift our spirits and bring us together.

It Happened in Springfield
William Gruenwalt memories about County Fair in 1900’s held ½ mile from Springfield then dropped.
Then in Springfield had annual Old Settlers picnic which was county wide held every August with many
attractions such as races, ball games etc. The Tulane Bros. had a steam powered merry go round at 2 nd
and Main Street. Existing county fair was reorganized in 1937-38. Some of the first leaders were John
Wiese, Bill Vierrregger, Ben Schobert, Frank Cockerill, Cliff Caley, and others he couldn’t recall. I think
the present fair grounds were built in 1959 with Sapry County having the largest free fair in the state.
William was born in 1909. He shared his memories in 1982 for Springfield centennial celebration. He was
born in August 10, 1903 northwest of Springfield on the H. Krambeck farm. He lived in the vicinity of
northwest of Springfield until 1977 when he moved to Papillion.
