Welcome December

Hey Springfield, Small Business Saturday… Take Two is
this Saturday, December 6th, 2025

Nebraska gave us a full-on snow globe for the original Small Business Saturday—so instead of fighting the weather, they’re embracing the spirit and sliding the celebration to Saturday, December 6th.
And honestly? It’s going to be even better.

Bundle up, grab a friend, and come make a whole day of it in Downtown Springfield. Our shops are ready to kick off December with fun, festive energy—and they’re counting on us to help make this month magical for small businesses that make Springfield Springfield.

And keep your eyes open…
Santa will probably swing by the Springfield Library to check his mail. Did you know the library and Santa are pretty tight? With all those good books, it’s basically his second office. He might even sneak around the shops to see if he can find a cookie or two.

And speaking of cookies—

You won’t want to miss the Annual Library Cookie Walk on Saturday, December 13th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tables overflowing with homemade cookies, ready for you to fill a bag and leave a donation. It’s sweet, it’s simple, and it supports our wonderful library.

Let’s shop local, spread kindness, and make this December one to remember, Springfield.

Cold Weather Apparel
Please be reminded, we will go outside each day, weather permitting. It is very important
that your child arrives at school dressed for colder weather. We do have a few winter weather
items here in the office, however, sending your child with these items is very helpful.

Every year the Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph's Church in Springfield very generously donates coats for children who need them. The cold weather is right around the corner, and we do go to recess outside every day, weather permitting. It gets cold, and every student needs and
deserves a warm coat, hat and gloves. Please plan ahead and check your closets to see what needs you have. Contact me to make arrangements for coats. I will need to know each child's age and size. We keep all requests confidential and discreetly get the coats to you. Please do not
hesitate to either call or email me at 402-895-9602 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
PLEASE do not hesitate to request coats
if needed! Thank you!

It's Springfield History

In September 1980, Margaret Blum sold her Springfield tavern, the Dew Drop Inn, to Stuart and
Gloria Sass. Previously Mr. Sass worked in the beef processing business in St. Louis, Missouri.
He and his family wanted to return to their hometown when the opportunity came to purchase the
Dew Drop Inn. The building at 153 Main Street had almost always been a tavern. Before 1903
when most of the south side of Main Street was destroyed by a fire, the building had housed a
bank and butcher shop. After rebuilding, the building became a tavern. A 1994 Springfield
Monitor newspaper article noted that the tavern’s décor had not changed s, much since the
1940’s. Softball and volleyball trophies lined the walls from teams the Dew Drop Inn sponsored.
The Dew Drop Inn has long served as a community gathering spot. After Sass retired and sold
his business to a new owner, the establishment continued to function as a tavern until 2017, where the last owner sold the business.

Did you know?

Springfield was named for the many natural springs in the area — when it was founded in the 1870s, those springs helped give the town its name.
