-Both conference days are 1:25 release schedules.
-Friday the 13th (comp day) and Monday the 16th (President's Day) there is no school.
-Conferences begin at 2:00, teachers break for dinner 5-5:30, then conferences continue until 7:30.

Springfield History
The Opening of Rhoten’s Diner and Bakery
Norman and Juanita Rhoten opened Rhoten’s Diner and Bakery at 160 Main Street in Springfield
on Monday, October 17, 1977. The diner operated from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through
Saturday. The Rhotens were highly qualified for this venture; Mr. Rhoten had a twenty-year
career in the Navy before working four years at the Richfield Cafe and an additional year and a
half at Moe’s Steak House in Papillion. Mrs. Rhoten was also part of the staff at Richfield Cafe.
Not only was Mr. Rhoten a skilled chef, but he was also an experienced baker who created a
variety of pastries. Rhoten’s Diner and Bakery remained in operation until October 1981, at
which point the building was sold to Dr. Michael Liebentritt, Tom Prazan, and Bob Prazan.

Fit Tip: Simple Winter Vegetable Soup (Anti-Inflammatory Friendly)
Cold weather and busy schedules make this a perfect weeknight meal. It’s filling, budget-friendly, and packed with whole foods — the kind of meal that actually leaves you feeling better after you eat.
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- 2 cups peeled and chopped carrots
- 1 cup chopped celery
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups vegetable broth
- 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes (undrained)
- 3 cups peeled and diced potatoes
- 1 cup green beans
- 1 cup broccoli florets
- ½ tsp dried thyme
- 2 bay leaves
- Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Fresh parsley or chives for garnish
Instructions
- Sauté the vegetables
Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onion, carrots, and celery. Cook 8–10 minutes until softened. - Add aromatics
Stir in garlic and thyme. Cook about 1 minute until fragrant. Season lightly with salt and pepper. - Simmer the soup
Add potatoes, broth, and diced tomatoes. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover and cook 20–25 minutes, until potatoes are fork-tender. - Finish the vegetables
Add green beans and broccoli. Simmer another 10–15 minutes until all vegetables are tender. - Serve
Remove bay leaves. Garnish with parsley or chives and adjust seasoning.
Serve chunky or blend for a smoother soup.

Valentine’s Day didn’t start with candy hearts and gift aisles. The holiday traces back to St. Valentine, a Christian priest in 3rd-century Rome who was said to secretly perform marriages when soldiers were forbidden to wed. Over time the day became connected with love and devotion.
By the 1800s, handwritten valentines were common in England and America. In the United States, the tradition really took off when schools began classroom Valentine exchanges in the early 1900s. Teachers encouraged children to bring cards for classmates, turning the holiday into the friendly, everyone-included celebration many of us remember growing up.
So whether you’re buying flowers or just handing out a simple card, you’re part of a tradition that’s been shared for generations.
