SPRINGFIELD ARTWORKS NEWS

Help Springfield ArtWorks celebrate their first anniversary this November. They will be hosting two teachers from Wisconsin who are both authors. A sampling of their work will be on the Springfield ArtWorks website soon. Spaces in the classes will fill up fast as these teachers are very knowledgeable in the felting and jewelry arena. Just by happenstance, Margie, the owner of ArtWorks ran into them at a Chicago area stitchery event and after seeing and purchasing some of their pieces, she immediately inquired about their availability in November for the week of ArtWorks anniversary. Margie commented, "Airline tickets are purchased, 4 area ladies are on the list and excitement is apparent around the gallery." Class samples will be in the gallery the later part of September. In addition to the classes on the 4th and 5th of November, Artworks will also be having an open house on Saturday, November 6 for the general public to attend. Mark your calendars NOW she says. It should be a fun event. More details will be out in future Springfield e-newsletters.
Springfield ArtWorks will be closed from Sept 4-20 and will re-open on Sept 21 at 1pm. They can be reached by phone at 402-301-9162.
The state tourism conference will be held in Lincoln from October 12-14. Trembley said, "Last year’s event was very beneficial for me. I hope other organizations from Springfield can attend this event since it is held so close to home." The principal speakers at these events are national speakers who really know the tourism market. Attending these events really gets the word out about our great community, Trembley said. There are scholarships available to attend the conference. Deadline for applying is Sept 13. Please contact Dean at 402-376-2969 or
Stop by Springfield ArtWorks for your copy of Nebraskaland Magazine and the free Country Register, packed full of places to go in the area.

ONE BOOK, ONE NEBRASKA, ONE SARPY
In a first time ever collaborative event, the seven libraries in Sarpy County (Sump Memorial, LaVista Public, Bellevue Public, Springfield Memorial, Gretna Public, Thomas S. Power at Offutt and Bellevue University) are sponsoring an afternoon with The Home Place on October 2 at 2:00 p.m. featuring Dr. Joe Wydeven, author of “Wright Morris Revisited”. Wydeven is a Bellevue University emeritus professor of English and Humanities who personally knew Morris. The program will be held at Sump Memorial Library.
This year the One Book – One Nebraska selection – the book everyone across the state is reading - is called the The Home Place. Written by Wright Morris in 1948, The Home Place is the story of a one day visit to a farm in Lone Tree, Nebraska. If you picked this book up and flipped through the pages you might be surprised by its content. Every other page is a black and white photo. The “photo-text” was called “as near to a new fiction form as you could get” and could be seen today as a forerunner to the now popular graphic novels.
Wright Morris, born in 1910 in Central City, Nebraska, is thought of as one of America’s most gifted novelists and photographers. His impressions were shaped by the community he observed in his formative boyhood years in rural Nebraska. Some of the same artifacts photographed in the book can be seen in the John Sautter farmhouse and the Portal school. These two historical buildings located right next to the library in Papillion will be open to the public following Dr. Wydeven’s presentation . Please join us – and invite your friends - as we celebrate One Book- One Nebraska – One Sarpy with The Home Place at Sump Memorial Library.

Participants should prepare a tune or two to play for their fellow fiddlers. Memorization is optional. Pre-registration for the workshop is required. FIDDLING BEE
Greenblatt & Seay proudly announce the FOURTEENTH ANNUAL SCHOOLHOUSE FIDDLING BEE. This historical, hysterical event will take place on Sunday, October 10, at 2:30 PM, in the auditorium of the Old Avoca, Nebraska Schoolhouse. In the Open Division, fiddlers will play a hoedown, a waltz, and a tune of choice. There will also be other divisions of competition available for the adventurous fiddlers, including a Singing Fiddler's Contest, a Twin Fiddler's Contest, a Fee-Fi-Faux Fiddler's Contest (fiddle tunes played on any instrument other than a fiddle), and a Hocus-Pocus Contest (cross-tuning, sound effects, dancing, etc.), which will give fiddlers an opportunity to play tunes that are usually not allowed in any other contest. The prizes for the winners in the Open Division are $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place, and $25 for 3rd place. Prizes will also be awarded for 1st place in the other contests. Registration for contestants starts at 1:30 PM the day of the FIDDLING BEE. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $1.00 for children. Fiddlers and their back-ups are admitted for free.
