They once hosted presidents, foreign dignitaries and some of the most famous names of the Old West. They saw the advent of transportation from the wagon to the rail to the space shuttle. And day to day, they meant protection and supplies to the travelers, settlers, workers and soldiers of the region.
Omaha author Jeff Barnes introduces “The Forts of Nebraska” to patrons of the Springfield Memorial Library on Thursday, July 21, at 7 p.m. The program is a presentation of the Nebraska Humanities Council.
The 45-minute library talk covers 12 of the state’s military posts, covering more than 200 years of Nebraska history. “The Nebraska forts rank among the most important in the history of the Great Plains, at least one of them among the most important in American history,” said Barnes. His PowerPoint presentation includes a brief history of the posts, seldom heard tales, and many rarely seen historic images and maps.
Barnes is the author of “Forts of the Northern Plains: Guide to Historic Military Posts of the Plains Indian Wars,” available for purchase and signing after the talk. Curiosity for what happened to the forts – and how travelers can visit them today – led Barnes to drive more than 13,000 miles in writing.

Lofte Community Theatre
15841 Manley Rd
PO Box 62
Manley, NE 68403
The Lofte Community Theatre announces that its summer musical, "Annie," will open Friday, July 22, 2011.
“Annie” is a spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan. Soon Annie befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and finds a new family and home in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell and a loveable mutt named Sandy.
Ellie Swanson of Lincoln stars in the title role. Kris Raasch (also of Lincoln) plays he cantankerous Oliver Warbucks. Anna Stroebel of Omaha plays the conniving Miss Hannigan. The production is directed by Lofte Artistic Director, Kevin Colbert.
Performance dates are July 22-24, 28-31 and August 4-7. Curtain times are 7:30pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Sundays are 2pm matinees. Tickets for adults are $18. For this production only, children under the age of 12 are only $10.
The Lofte Community Theatre is located just east of the intersection of Hwy 1 and Hwy 50 near the town of Manley. For more information, please visit www.Lofte.com or call the box office (402) 234-2553.
AUDITION NOTICE
The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley will be holding auditions for its next production, "Cliffhanger" on Tuesday, July 26 and Wednesday, July 27 at 7pm.
This suspenseful thriller revolves around a mild-mannered Philosophy Professor who may be passed over for his long-awaited position as an endowed chair at the University. What will happen to his ruthlessly ambitious successor? How far will this gentle man go to protect his reputation and career?
There are several great parts to be had in this meaty story. Directed by Kevin Colbert, auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. The cast calls for 3 men and 2 women. Complete role descriptions can be found on the Lofte's audition page (http://www.lofte.com/auditions.htm).
Production dates for "Cliffhanger" are September 3, 4, 9-11 and 15-18. Those who have questions in regards to the show may contact Artistic Director Kevin Colbert by calling the theater at (402) 234-2553.
