MILITARY FAMILIES INVITED TO A DAY OF PUMPKIN PATCH FUN

Annual Military Family Day Planned at Bloom Where You’re Planted Farm

Bloom Where You're Planted Farm & Pumpkin Patch is hosting its fifth-annual Military Family Day on Sat. Sept. 24.  Service men and women and their immediate family members will free admission to the farm all day when presenting their military ID.

Farm owners Terry and Teresa Lorensen recognize the sacrifices these men and women, their spouses and children make as part of a military family, and want to provide them a fun break and a chance to celebrate the season.  "Plus, we just love meeting everyone and having a chance to say ‘thank you’.  Hearing from them how much they’ve enjoyed a day out with their family is really touching and a definite bonus.”  Every other regular business day during the season military families will receive $1.00 off admission for every member of their immediate family when presenting ID (regular admission $4.75).

The Pumpkin Festival at Bloom Where You're Planted Farm begins September 17th and continues through October 30.  Hours are 1:00-6:00 p.m. Fridays and 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.  The farm is open at other times by appointment.  Several more special event weekends are planned, including  Doggy Day Oct. 8 to benefit Happy Paws Pet Advocacy and the Plattsmouth Animal Shelter, and Ag Day Oct. 15 in cooperation with Conestoga FFA.   For a complete listing of activities at the farm, visit www.BloomPumpkinPatch.com.

Additional Information

Bloom Where You‘re Planted Farm is located at 911-108th St., rural Avoca, NE, 27 miles east of Lincoln or 30 miles south of Omaha.  Take US Hwy. 34 to 108th Street, then travel ½ mile north. Visit www.BloomPumpkinPatch.com for a map, directions, and calendar of special events, or call 402-267-4104.

The farm is owned and operated by Terry and Teresa Lorensen, and has been in Teresa’s family since 1944.  The farm and pumpkin patch opened to the public in 2005.

CELEBRATION OF YOUTH XVIII:  RISK & REWARD

A Celebration of Textile Art by Nebraska 4-H Youth will be held September 15 – October 15, 2011 at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery, Department of Textiles, Clothing & Design, College of Education and Human Sciences on UNL East Campus in the Home Economics Building.  Gallery Hours are Monday thru Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Thirty five Nebraska youth, including one Cass County 4-Her, will have their work showcased in the 18th annual Celebration of Youth.  Items were selected from the thousands of exhibits in the Clothing, Fashion Show, Home Environment and Quilt Quest departments at the 2011 Nebraska State Fair.  Natalia Nolting, age 13, daughter of Jason and Tasha Nolting of Murray, entered an intergenerational quilt in the Quilt Quest project area during the Cass County Fair.  Her entry was chosen for Nebraska State Fair competition and selected for the Celebration of Youth event.

On October 15, the department of Textiles, Clothing & Design will host a day of workshops for the youth and their parents.

The public is invited to the exhibition’s closing event on October 15, 2011 at 5:30 PM in the auditorium of the Home Economics building.   Each exhibitor in the Gallery will give a short artist’s talk about their piece.  The program will be followed by a final opportunity to see the exhibition in the Hillestad Gallery, and a reception hosted by the Friends of the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery.

Greenblatt & Seay proudly announce the FIFTEENTH ANNUAL SCHOOLHOUSE FIDDLING BEE.  This historical, hysterical event will take place on Sunday, October 9, at 2:30 PM, downstairs in the Old Avoca, Nebraska Schoolhouse.  In the Open Division, fiddlers will play a hoedown, a waltz, and a tune of choice.  There will also be other divisions of competition available for the adventurous fiddlers, including a Singing Fiddler's Contest, a Twin Fiddler's Contest, a Fee-Fi-Faux Fiddler's Contest (fiddle tunes played on any instrument other than a fiddle), and a Hocus-Pocus Contest (cross-tuning, sound effects, dancing, etc.), which will give fiddlers an opportunity to play tunes that are usually not allowed in any other contest.  The prizes for the winners in the Open Division are $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place, and $25 for 3rd place.  Prizes will also be awarded for 1st place in the other contests. Registration for contestants starts at 1:30 PM the day of the FIDDLING BEE.  Admission is $10.00 for adult, $5.00 for students, and $1.00 for children.  Fiddlers and their back-ups are admitted for free.  For more information, call 402-275-3221, log on to www.greenblattandseay.com, or e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots.
