“IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD”

Rogers House

In 1882 the Rogers House, a first-class country hotel, was constructed by W.H. Davidson. On grand opening night, dinner consisted of fresh homemade bread, country sausage, gravy, mashed potatoes, hot biscuits and honey, Arbuckle package roasted coffee, Jersey cream, and homemade apple pie. Salesmen or Drummers, as they were called then, coming from Chicago, St. Louis, New York, Kansas City, St. Joseph, and Omaha came to Springfield and the Rogers House as often as possible. The Rogers House was located where the Community Building is now.
