Springfield Platteview Community Schools Receives $200,000 from Facebook for Technology Upgrades and STEM Curriculum
Springfield, Neb. (November 20, 2019) - Springfield Platteview students, staff, and community members will soon see digital media projects, STEM experiments and video presentations on larger-than-life displays in the Platteview High School gymnasium. A $200,000 grant from Facebook was announced today to support tech upgrades and related technical skill-building opportunities including a video display system in the high school gymnasium, as well as STEM programming throughout the school district.
“This grant allows us to enhance our digital media courses and STEM curriculum, technology club opportunities, internships and events,” said Brett Richards, superintendent of Springfield Platteview Community Schools. “The investment continues our district’s journey toward excellence in a world where technical skills are required, and helps us continue to meet our district’s mission to ensure all students have the college and career skills necessary for their future.”
The announcement was made at a 5:30 p.m. news conference today, putting the new video display system to use for the first time with the public. Following the announcement, Facebook presented the Digital Families Community Event, a freeworkshop that provided online safety information. Senator Robert Clements and Springfield Mayor Robert Roseland were on hand for the announcement, and Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts weighed in on the grant.
“We’re thrilled that Facebook now has a home on the Silicon Prairie in Nebraska,” said Governor Pete Ricketts. “Today’s generous grant shows that Facebook is deeply invested in the future of our state. The grant will give the rising generation of students at Platteview High School amazing opportunities to learn digitally and to acquire tech skills.”
Springfield Platteview Community Schools serves 1,150 students in Sarpy County from preschool through 12th grade. While the district rolled out a 1:1 technology program for K-12 several years ago, this grant gives students more opportunities to engage in the application of digital media and STEM learning.
“Facebook is committed to playing a positive role and investing in the long-term vitality of the communities in which we operate,” said Matt Sexton, community development regional manager for Facebook. “Our Papillion Data Center location here in Sarpy County benefits from community connections like this, and we hope to continue to make a difference in the communities in which we live and work.”
Facebook Community Action Grants Now Open
The $200,000 grant to Springfield Platteview Community Schools is just one way Facebook intends to be a positive force in the area. The Facebook Community Action Grants program is available for the first time to nonprofits in Sarpy County for 2020. The program supports projects that address critical community needs by putting the power of technology to use for community benefit, connecting people online or off, or improving local STEM education. The application is open until December 3. Qualified schools and nonprofits can find out more here. The terms and conditions for the Community Action Grants program are here.

“IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY”
This photo shows one of the buildings that was moved to Springfield from Sarpy Centre. When in Sarpy Centre, it was used by the Brass Band for practice. After moving to Springfield, the first Congregational Church held regular services for a while in the building. It was also used for dances and political meetings. At the time this picture was taken it housed a restaurant. Later it became the O.W. Joern General Store. In 1926, Mr. Joern offered a room upstairs to the Woman's Club to house the first Library.
