OPPD Customers Reporting an Uptick in Scam Calls

Omaha Public Power District customers are reporting a spike in scam phone calls today. The utility had received around 100 reports by early afternoon.

In 2019, OPPD received 1,336 reports of calls from scammers. That’s a 102% increase from five years ago. And the problem shows no signs of slowing.

This long-running scam targets utilities here in our area and across the nation. Aggressive callers pose as utility workers, trying to convince customers they owe money. They often instruct customers to use a pre-paid debit, gift or Green Dot card to settle up. Callers threaten to disconnect service if customers do not pay. Often, the scammers use “spoofing” technology so that caller identification appears to show a legitimate OPPD phone number.

None of these calls are from the utility.

Our call center representatives would never cold-call a customer demanding immediate payment. If customers were truly overdue on their bills to the point where service could be disconnected, they would receive written notice first. Authentic utility representatives would never request payment via a purchased pre-paid credit or gift card.

OPPD continues to work in partnership with local public power utilities to raise awareness among our customers and identify scam trends. If customers receive such a call, they can help us by noting the phone number used. OPPD is working with a leading toll-free phone number registry management company. As numbers are reported and verified to be non-OPPD numbers, we can get the phone number shut down.

OPPD stresses that customers should never give personal or financial information to a stranger during an unsolicited phone call. If such a person should appear at their door unannounced, claiming to work for the utility, ask for identification or verification. OPPD employees always carry identification. Failure to produce identification is a tip-off to the customer that something is wrong.

Customers with questions about making a payment, or about their account in general, should always call OPPD directly. Within Omaha, the number is 402-536-4131. Outside of Omaha, customers should call 1-877-536-4131.

Customers in our rural areas may talk with their local offices during business hours, as well.

COVID-19 Situational Update

As of February 27, 2020, there were 78,497 reported cases in China and 3,797 cases in locations outside China. In addition to sustained transmission in China, there is evidence of community spread in several additional countries. CDC has updated travel guidance to reflect this information

To date, there has been limited spread of COVID-19 in the United States. As of February 26, 2020, there were a total of 61 cases within the United States, 46 of these were among repatriated persons from high-risk settings. The other 15 cases were diagnosed in the United States; 12 were persons with a history of recent travel in China and 2 were persons in close household contact with a COVID-19 patient (i.e. person-to-person spread). One patient with COVID-19 who had no travel history or links to other known cases was reported on February 26, 2020, in California. The California Department of Public Health, local health departments, clinicians, and CDC are working together to investigate this case and are identifying contacts with whom this individual interacted.

On February 26th the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services distributed a news release across the state asking Nebraskans with travel in the past 14 days to countries with community transmission of COVID-19 to contact their local health departments (http://dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/DHHS-Asking-Nebraskans-With-Travel-in-Past-14-Days-to-Countries-With-Community-Transmission-of-COVID-19-to-Contact-Local-HD.aspx). SCHD along with State and Federal partners are implementing measure, such as self-reporting to local health departments, to slow and contain transmission of COVID-19 in the U.S. SCHD is assessing, monitoring and providing guidance to travelers arriving from these areas.

If confirmed cases should arise, SCHD has systems in place to track and monitor individuals whom have come in contact with the confirmed cases to help identify secondary cases and minimize the potential for ongoing, undetected, person-to-person transmission.

We are continuing to encourage all our community partners (i.e. County and City offices, schools, businesses, etc.) to take action now to be prepared for the possibility of community spread of COVID-19. We have suggested that all businesses review and update their pandemic flu plans and/or continuity of operations plans. Additionally, we are encouraging partners to begin to think about non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) that could be implemented to help slow the spread of illness.

More information for businesses can be found on the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/specific-groups/guidance-business-response.html.

More information on non-pharmaceutical interventions can be found on the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/nonpharmaceutical-interventions/index.html

If you would have any questions regarding COVID-19 please don’t hesitate to reach out.
