IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

History town1995(photo courtesy Omaha World Herald)

Springfield was the fourth winner in the Omaha World Herald’s “Great Neighborhoods” contest in 1995. The winning entry was submitted by Megg Richards. Megg wrote about the neighborliness not only of the residents of Springfield but of rural residents, as well. A World Herald staff writer interviewed local residents about what makes Springfield feel like home. The title of the article was “Springfield is More Family Than Town, Residents Say.” Examples included: farmers helping a recently widowed farm wife harvest crops, teenagers organizing a benefit for one of their own lost in a tragic accident, staying by someone’s side after falling until the rescue squad arrives, great kids who don’t even walk on lawns, and the commitment of local residents to their community and its activities. That is what made Springfield a “Great Neighborhood”.

SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS

The temperature rose and rose and suddenly it's 95 degrees outside, windy, but 95 degrees.  And with the ground temperature at 53 degrees we are getting so close. I try to wait until 55, but sometimes the itch to see something planted in that bare ground that you have tilled and amended and tilled again gets to strong and it must be filled. Some plants don't do well until ground temperature reaches 60 degrees so be aware. Those pots must have color and those raised beds must get those tomatoes and peppers. Soon we will be trying to identify those rots and spots and critters that crawl.

In the meantime I remind you as you plant check the recommendations for that plant you so eagerly want to see in the ground. Did you look at the back of the tag and find out ultimate spacing. Too close together can cause problems. Does the plant prefer sun (6 - 8 hrs), partial, or full shade? Is it an annual (survives 1 year), bi-annual (1 to 2 yrs), or perennial (a repeat plant every year)? How tall does it get is so often forgotten because it looks pretty and we don't realize what we got grows to 6 ft instead of 6 inches we needed for the space.
Also one more thing to think about is you live in Nebraska, hail and wind are major factors even as summer arrives and you need to prepare for them. Always have sheets or blankets available for your plants that you are unable to move inside. Of course we can't guarantee they still might get damaged but you can do your best to contend with Mother Nature.
