IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

History SprDays1992

Springfield Days coordinator, Kay Gosch, dressed up as a clown for the Springfield Days Main Street Parade.

Springfield Days 1992 was held on Saturday June 20 beginning the day with a two mile and 10K run sponsored by the Platteview Optimist Club. Other events included a pancake feed, craft & bake sale, food stands, sand volleyball tournament, musical entertainment, ugly pick-up contest, Main Street parade, road rally & Springfield at Heart presentation. Many local organizations and individuals volunteered to make the Springfield Days celebration a success. All events were held on Springfield’s downtown Main Street.

SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS

Plants are funny things. You plant the seed or buy the plant and you water, fertilize, putting them in the best environment, you think, and still they can frustrate you so much.

They don't bloom when they should. They get infested with insects or some sort of funny looking red spots or they just won't grow at all. Be patient gardeners! It's too early for the hydrangeas to be popping out and the red spots can be diagnosed and properly treated. (Questions contact 402-444-7804 Douglas/Sarpy County Master Gardener Helpline) You can do this. I have faith in you.

Now, as far as our topic chosen from last week. Let's talk about the bush variety and/or patio variety of plants. These veggies are great for containers. I have done sweet one million tomatoes for years and snacking on them every morning. Make sure the container you choose is deep and wide enough for the plant. You can gently twist the stems according to growth or you can tie the stems up the trellis. Be careful of the fertilizer you use and make sure you water a little more often because pots can dry out faster.

This will be the last of the plant or garden prep topics due to the planting dates ending. So, we will talk about flowers next unless Connie gets another topic of interest.

And now, New Master Gardener's Adventure!

The Master Gardeners are starting a new adventure and we would like you all to join in.

Have you ever been in your garden and wondered about what to do with those extra plants?
Those daylillies, hostas, and peppers that all need to be divided or thinned can now be brought down for a citywide plant swap.
1. Please identify your plant and its bloom color if you can.
2. You bring your plants down to give to another and you may choose another.  If you are unable to bring a plant and you see one you like then help yourself.
3. Be kind to your neighbor and limit your selections to two of each varieties.
4. Please no bare rooted item.
We will be dividing plants when time permits on different varieties at the Sarpy County Fair so come visit and keep and eye out.
5. No weeds, no weed, no poisonous plants.
Watch for the stand and place you divisions there!
