The Sarpy County Fair is fast approaching. 4-H club members are getting ready to enter in Fair competitions, as in year’s past.  In 1992, nine year old Jamie Oltman carried on the Ostransky family tradition and entered for the first time. She competed in twenty-seven categories. Brian Devine belonged to the Royal Ribbons 4-H group. He entered in livestock events and a cabinet in the woodworking category. After the Alex family moved to the Springfield area they wanted to get involved in the Fair. Their son, Jason, competed in the bird competitions by entering his two cockatiels, Fred and Demetry, along with his pigeons.

Gardening

SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS

 They are coming....

Large green caterpillars are all over my tomatoes, what do you think? I think they are tomato horn worms. They are large green caterpillars of the hawk moth. They can reach up to 4 inches in length and of course they love tomatoes. Easier to just pick them off than to try and treat.
Cicada killer wasps are large as well. They are more noise than attacking variety. They are after cicadas and nothing else.
June bugs should be almost gone about now, but the Japanese Beetles are still around. Bucket of soapy water and patience. Oh yes, the grasshoppers who seem to eat everything. They are so annoying when you mow and stick to your legs. Below you will find a picture of a spike after grasshoppers and what it was supposed to be. Not a lot to do just cover again.
There will always be little insects we have to deal with but the blessings you get from growing flowers and vegetables out way the insects.
Grow Green!
Thank you Dana Freeman and Scott Evans with the Douglas County Extension for the information in this article.
