SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS

Reminder List for Fall Gardeners

1.  Mowing is okay now before we start going back into the 90's
2. Check your plants for diseases. We have seen a fair amount of powdery mildew at the fair. This is a thin white film that develops when the plant receives too much water and has low air circulation between the stems and leaves. Our hydrangea in the middle of the main garden is suffering from this. You will see it on anything including peonies. We will leave it contained and up for awhile and then remove all leaves and debris for next year.
3.  Aerate and overseed your lawn. Look at your lawns and see if it needs a "pick me up". Make sure and read our Nebguide.

4.  Pruning: Best time to prune is after the leaves have dropped from the trees and bushes. It let's them to accumulate all the sunlight for their winter fight. Make sure and know the rules for the plant in question including the 1/3 rule for shrubs.
5. You can still transplant irises but you are quickly running out of time. Lift them out of their current position, shake loose dirt and gently seperate, check for rot and bug holes (rot is just clearing away soft from the rhizome), cut fans back at about 3"s, dunk all plants in a 10% chlorox water solution and let dry, and wash again in just water and let dry again, and replant 3 to 4"s apart. They may not bloom next year but it's a good idea to do this every 3 to 5 years.
6. Make sure and make your garden maps and divide those that need more room. You can bring those extra to the swap and share shelves at the fair.
