Community Engagement Survey

The Springfield Community Foundation (SCF) is embarking on a new phase and will be undergoing a strategic planning process to reshape the vision, mission, and goals of the foundation. SCF wants to ensure it is aligned and in tune with what our community members feel is important and desires to invest in areas where it can have the most significant impact.

SCF values the thoughts and opinions of its community members and is reaching out to gather feedback regarding our great town.

Thank you!

IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

History ParkBoard

Taking a look at the new Springfield park property. Pictured (left to right): Park Board members: Arlo Nielsen, Bill Sayers. City Council members: Neal Eickhoff, Ivan Novak.

The Springfield city council formed a new Park Board in 1972. The first members appointed to the Park Board consisted of: Gene Abrahamson, Robert Kiger, Robert Leigh, Arlo Nielsen, and William Sayer. The Park Board’s first major project was to choose land for a new park. After many negotiations in November 1974, the city was finally able to secure land just south of the elementary school. With a fundraising goal of $11, 000, the Park Board began working towards establishing the new park. Other improvements to Springfield included a tree planting project on city property and improving City Park with new playground equipment and a tennis court.

SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS

Reminder List for Fall Gardeners

1.  Mowing is okay now before we start going back into the 90's

2. Check your plants for diseases. We have seen a fair amount of powdery mildew at the fair. This is a thin white film that develops when the plant receives too much water and has low air circulation between the stems and leaves. Our hydrangea in the middle of the main garden is suffering from this. You will see it on anything including peonies. We will leave it contained and up for awhile and then remove all leaves and debris for next year.

3.  Aerate and overseed your lawn. Look at your lawns and see if it needs a "pick me up". Make sure and read our Nebguide.

OK enough about turf

4.  Pruning: Best time to prune is after the leaves have dropped from the trees and bushes. It let's them to accumulate all the sunlight for their winter fight. Make sure and know the rules for the plant in question including the 1/3 rule for shrubs.

5. You can still transplant irises but you are quickly running out of time. Lift them out of their current position, shake loose dirt and gently separate, check for rot and bug holes (rot is just clearing away soft from the rhizome), cut fans back at about 3"s, dunk all plants in a 10% Chlorox water solution and let dry, and wash again in just water and let dry again, and replant 3 to 4"s apart. They may not bloom next year but it's a good idea to do this every 3 to 5 years.

6. Make sure and make your garden maps and divide those that need more room. You can bring those extra to the swap and share shelves at the fair.
