Springfield Remembers - Howard McBride
Howard McBride was honored with the Springfielder at Heart award in December 2012. At the time, he was 103 years old. McBride was born on March 19, 1909, the year of the first radio broadcast. For the majority of his life, McBride was a resident of Springfield. While attending Springfield High School, Howard played basketball. After practice, he would walk five miles back home since there was no bus service for after-school activities. McBride was married to his wife Berdetta for seventy-four years before she passed away in 2008. Together they had three sons, two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. He was a farmer for most of his life although for twenty years he worked at a grain elevator. At 103 years old, McBride walked around the neighborhood every day, weather permitting. His only medication was an occasional aspirin. Howard McBride passed away at 106 years old on February 17, 2016. He was a Springfield treasure.
