Welcome Back, Springfield!
As we step into October, we’re kicking things off by recognizing an essential topic for everyone—Cyber Security Awareness. Did you know that October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month? It’s a perfect time to remind ourselves of the importance of staying safe online. Whether at home, at work, or in school, cyber threats are real and can affect all of us.
Cyber Security Week
Cybersecurity isn’t just for large corporations; it’s something everyone needs to prioritize. With so much of our daily life happening online, from shopping and banking to social media and emails, ensuring that your digital footprint is protected is crucial.
Here are a few key cybersecurity tips to keep in mind this week:
- Use Strong Passwords – Avoid using simple passwords like your name or "password123." Instead, create complex passwords that mix letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) – Protect your accounts by adding a second layer of security, like a text message code or an app notification.
- Be Cautious of Phishing Scams – Be wary of unexpected emails or messages asking for personal information or clicking on suspicious links.
- Keep Software Updated – Make sure your computer, phone, and all apps are updated with the latest security patches.

Stay safe, Springfield, and see you next week!

It Happened in Springfield
In January 1957, Springfield businesses began offering cash drawings on Saturday nights. Two drawings were held, one at 8:00pm. and another at 8:30p.m. To be eligible, persons were required to register at any of the nineteen Springfield businesses. Although no purchase was necessary to be eligible, winners needed to be present to collect their prize. The Springfield Boosters sponsored the cash drawing with the Springfield merchants financing the promotion. Just one month later, after a complaint to the State of Nebraska Attorney General office, the cash drawings were stopped. Attorney General Clarence Beck notified Sarpy County Attorney Dixon Adams that both the Papillon and Springfield weekly cash drawings were in violation of the state’s anti-lottery laws. The requirement that winners needed to present to collect their prize was illegal.

This is the way country music started out, with acoustic instruments, before electricity. People sat out on the lawn, on the porch, or in a friend’s house and played their instruments together.
