IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

This donkey seems to be giving it's rider a bit of a hard time. Getting moving, donkey!
For a unique fundraiser, the Celebrate Safe (after prom party) organization held the famous “Donkey Basketball Tournament” with Platteview High School faculty vs. Platteview High junior and senior students. In 1989, breaking a tie the Platteview High School faculty made a comeback to win the tournament in overtime play. The winning faculty team members consisted of: Paula Bruce, Bob Diekmann, Sam Elliott, Cindy Gray, Jim Hampton, Lisa Kastens, Wade Lanum, Dennis Mahaney, Robert Olander, Beth Penke, Gallopin’ Glenn Renner, Chris Salberg, Tony Sharpe, Kelli Westphal and Mark Whealy. Student competitors were recognized for their innovative and hilarious assortment of ways to make baskets, such as standing on the backs of their donkey or planting their donkey just in front of the basket to hoist the ball in. The Celebrate Safe committee thanked all participants and the audience for a successful event.

SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
Last week we talked about the gardens you can find at the Sarpy County Fairgrounds, so this week I said we were going to talk about the AAS sign you see at the garden and what exactly that means.
If you go plant shopping, do you look at the plant tag itself or are you looking to see just how big it will get or if it needs a certain amount of sun? While these are very important factors for plant selection there is also another symbol in the corner that may say AAS.
What AAS stands for is the All American Selections. This is a seed or plant testing service that has gardens throughout the United States that over the course of a year for annuals or three for perennials plants are examined to see if they survive in that particular part of the country.
There are a couple of these in Omaha with the most prominent one being the Backyard Farmer garden on East campus UNL. Sarpy County Fairgrounds has a set of perennials being tested along the main garden fence and annuals in specials flower beds.
Please come check them out throughout the year and remember GROW GREEN!
