IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

History Museum1985

The Spring Rock Countryside Museum and Rock Shop was located north of Springfield on Highway 50. William Sass owned the museum and rock shop. Bill Sass previously owned Sass Hardware on the northeast corner of 2nd & Main Street. Soon his rock collection outnumbered the store’s hardware items. It was then that Sass realized it was time to make a move. The museum and rock shop opened sometime in the mid 1960’s. His rock shop and Native American artifacts were considered one of the seven best in the nation. The shop stayed a Springfield destination until 1985 when Bill Sass passed away on January 30th of that year. In June 1985, the Sass family held an auction to sell the shelving and other equipment at the shop. Stuart Sass, Bill’s son, planned to store the rocks and artifacts.

SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS

spiderwort

Sometimes we choose a plant for the garden that we can't resist the color of the flower or the description of the plant (grows well in our zone). That could be the growing conditions are ideal for the plant; the plant grows and blooms and goes to seed immediately for protection, or they spread underground and then you may never get control of your pretty plant/weed. Well, Virginia Spiderwort is both a weed and a plant. While I am totally enamored with the color of the flowers, it is totally invasive (my gosh does it spread). It comes in purple and light purple and there is some variety in the foliage. If you want to see what they look like come on down to the Sarpy County Fairgrounds and take a look.
