A horse-riding club began in 1954, meeting at the Springfield Gun Club located near 118th & Buffalo Road. Fred Iske initiated the group which named themselves the Buffalo Busters. Practices were held on Tuesday nights for competitions with other riding clubs from nearby towns. The team had overnight rides and cookouts, rode in area parades. They raced on the Ak-Sar-Ben track. Participants wore matching shirts during competitions which were originally white but were dyed yellow by Nellie Lorenz. Examples of the competitions included: Horseshoe Race, Four in Line, Four abreast, Two Abreast, Pair Cloverleaf, Cloverleaf Barrel Race, Potato Race, Candy Race. Buffalo Busters rider, Barb Vierregger Mills, remembers these team members: Elaine, Sylvia, and Loretta Krajieck, Moe and John Erhart, Howard and Harold Engberg, Bill Haynie, Toby Haynie, Henry and Bob Ruff, Cindy Zimmerman, David Jay Startzer, and Ronnie Pelzer.

SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS
Clouds?!?
Is this a possibility of rain in our future? I am not sure I even remember what rain looks like.
But as I look at the forecast and drive around town it got me thinking...(I know dangerous) have you checked your sprinklers?
So many people put these sprinkler systems in and leave them on the settings that the installers put them, but your landscape has changed probably. That tree that was little five years ago is not so little anymore. Something has knocked into one of your heads and turned it so it faces the sidewalk or one is busted by the lawn mower and your sending gallons of water to one spot in the yard.
In this day of drought and water conservation pleas, take a look one more time and see where your water is going. Place a tuna can out to see how long it takes to reach an inch while you run your system and see how much your watering in certain areas. Find out why your water bill is so high and fix that broken head.
Hopefully we will get the promised rain this time around. It may not help your local farmers, but at least it will settle the dust and make the lawns and smiles green back up.
