IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

History Storm1970

This photo was taken at the Harvey Mahloch farm west of Hwy 50 and Platteview Rd.

History storm JrHigh

Roof damage on the new wing at Platteview Central Jr. High School

History Storm town

One of the many cleanup efforts in Springfield.

The weather turned fierce when winds near 100 miles per hour caused significant destruction throughout most of Sarpy County on August 2, 1970. The Springfield and Gretna areas were hit hardest. Barns and other farm structures were destroyed along with thousands of uprooted trees. Both Platteview High and Platteview Jr. High Schools suffered serious damages, particularly to the roof of a new wing in the Jr. High. In Springfield, losses to Zimmerman Feed Yard located on the south edge of town included several head of cattle killed or injured by flying or fallen debris. The city of Springfield was declared a disaster area. The entire county’s damage was assessed at $1,771,500.

SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS

I love all the seasons as a gardener. Spring with new life going into the ground, summer with warmer weather and the chance to see your hard work shine for all the people to see, winter for a chance to rest. Oh wait, I forgot fall. I love the colors, the harvest, cooler temperatures, but not the RAGWEED!

Be looking at your garden now everyday for veggies to pull. Can't let cucumbers get to long or big because they will turn bitter. Tomatoes should be ripening like gang busters now with the cooler temps. Enjoy the BLT's.
Make sure and keep watering but don't drown your plants. Drowning can cause crown rots and calcium end rot on tomatoes.
And now that we are getting close to harvest, respect the farmers and the combines and grain trucks coming out of middle of fields. Don't be in a hurry to speed around them, you will get to where you need to go and winter will come  soon enough.
